What is the point? | Guest Post by Meredith Mahlum

Hello there! As Emma mentioned a few weeks ago, my name is Meredith, and I'm going to be writing a guest post for y'all. :)

A little bit about me...

I'm a freshman in college studying to be a teacher. I currently teach ballet, swim lessons, and piano lessons. I absolutely love working with kids. I also have a thing for princesses and anything else girly--pink, purple, sparkles--that's me!

This past week, I have been in Awanita Valley, SC, at Colonial Baptist Church's annual summer camp. The theme this year was "What is the point?" Since this material is fresh in my mind, I thought I'd share with you some of the things I learned. I'm going to try my best to make this a unified, cohesive post, but there's a good chance it's going to be an intelligble jumble of notes and thoughts from the week.

One of the huge things emphasized this year at summer camp was the concept of getting past ourselves. As humans, we are so wrapped up in me, me, me. As Christians, we need to be wrapped up in God.

What can we do? Get past ourselves. Get into God. Keep everything in its place.

In order to get past ourselves, we need to first get over ourselves. Secondly, we need to lose ourselves. And thirdly, we need to forget ourselves. We hold ourselves too highly in the overall scheme of life.We need to be reminded that the universe doesn't revolve around us. That brings us to the subject of humility.

The only way we can learn to be not so into ourselves is by being so into Christ. That way, true humility is born as the fruit of our love for Christ. That, my friends, is genuine humility.

Some more key points...

Worship = loving God.
Discipleship = Helping others love God.

We think we have become the point--We are NOT.

We need to un-learn ourselves by getting over ourselves, losing ourselves, and forgetting ourselves.

We need to be in a relationship with Christ. Love Him by trying to understand His love for you.

Love for Christ brings us back to the point --to love God and to love people.

Our goal in life should be to savor God with all that we are.

In order to make disciples, be willing to be a listener. Try talking to people. Be willing to touch them for Christ. Reach out. If you want to lead people to where they need to be (living in Christ), find out where they are and start there.

Discipleship involves:
Teaching-learning God's word together.
Training-helping others know what to do and how to do it.
Togetherness-life spent together.

So, we are called to make disciples. That is Christ's command while we're here on earth. We aren't doing it. In order to do it, we need to unlearn ourselves, lose ourselves, and forget ourselves.

Love God first.

Savor Him.

Adore Him.

Worship Him.

Obey Him.

Love people.

Serve them.

Be Christ to them.

Make disciples. Live for Christ together.

And that...

...is the POINT.
